Have a question that's not here? Just ask!
So many reasons! There's a ton of evidence-based science behind how resistance, balance, core, speed/agility/quickness, plyometric, cardiorespiratory, and yoga/flexibility training can improve athletic performance- I won't bore you with it, but ask any professional athlete and I can guarantee you they training for their sport just as much in the gym as they do on the mountain. Mountain sports require using your muscles in unique ways that the body isn't used to doing, so when we "practice" on the mountain, we're essentially teaching our muscle a new skill. The more we keep working on that skill on the mountain, the better our muscles remember how to do that skill. So if we keep practicing those same motor skill off the mountain, strengthen the muscles that help you engage those muscle skills, and enhance your balance and stability with those movement patterns in mind, your body will be primed and ready to perform those movement patterns on the mountain. My program will help you gain strength and stability in the muscles you specifically use for your sport of choice, finesse your balance to increase your skill capacity and prevent injury, and improve the same motor skills needed to perform at the highest level on mountain. You'll also build your cardiorespiratory fitness so you're not winded every time you're doing those skills in a way that's unique to your sport, whether that's a powerful backflip off a jump on the slopes, a tough long-distance 14er, or climbing up those little hills that come up every so often on the downhill mountain bike trails. And perhaps most importantly, you'll learn how to ensure you're recovering properly so you're not overtraining and you're body is truly ready to take on the mountains!
There are a lot of fantastic workout plans out there besides mine- and a lot of not so great ones. But there is one thing I cannot stress enough: one size fits all fitness programming DOES NOT WORK. When you workout with me, you're getting programming from a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer with a specialization in Performance Enhancement for athletes- not some random self-proclaimed "fitness expert." My programming is rooted in evidence based fitness science that's been proven to help athletes make major gains in their chosen sport. Custom fitness programming means everything is tailored to YOUR mountain goals and YOUR abilities. I have a deep understanding of the human movement system and how it applies to mountain athletes because I'm constantly on the mountain myself. I know that different styles of snowboarding and mountain biking require different the use of different muscle groups, muscle actions, and cardiovascular output, and therefore require vastly different training programs to see real improvement on mountain. I also understand that everyone has very different abilities in the gym and can build a program that works WITH your abilities, not against them. This is why those cookie cutter "get in shape for season" programs don't work- they don't take into account the nuance of different riding styles, and you could be picking a program that's too easy for you (which means you won't actually see any results) or too difficult for you (which could lead to injury, muscle strain, reduce your desire to stick with a plan, and risk negatively altering your movement patterns rather than improving them). The strength-focused resistance training built into my workouts is never timed and always delivered in repetition count to ensure your muscles are getting the right amount of work with each set and your muscles don't get out of balance by performing unilateral work. And finally, my programming is progressive. Every week builds upon the week before, but adds a new challenge to ensure you're not only nailing down the skills you need to improve your performance, but adds a layer of new challenges to those skills to those skills that can be applied on the mountain.
Snowboarding, splitboarding, mountain biking, downhill/backcountry skiing, hiking, trail running, climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, and soccer players. I can create programming for pretty much every sport there is, so if you don't see it listed here, just ask!
You might. You might not. Here's why:
Don't worry- if you are looking to improve your athletic performance AND drop some pounds, I can customize your fitness programming accordingly! That is one of the many things we'll discuss during your initial consultation. However, if you are really looking to optimize fat loss in addition to maximize your athletic performance, I'd highly recommend working with a registered dietician or nutritionist in addition to your exercise program.
Advice, sure! But I cannot provide detailed meals plans, as I am not a registered dietician/nutritionist. However, I am currently working on my nutrition credentials, so stayed tuned!
